Do I Have Narcolepsy?

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder that is thought to be genetic and grossly under diagnosed. Narcolepsy generally has an onset of between ten and twenty years of age. It is difficult to diagnose because most people just assume that they are run down or tired and do not seek medical help. Another problem with diagnosis is that narcolepsy can mean different things to different people with some sufferers only experiencing daytime tiredness.

People with narcolepsy have different sleep patterns than ones without narcolepsy. Sleep studies show that narcoleptics sometimes or always enter REM sleep immediately upon falling asleep. Normally, it should take about 90 minutes to enter REM sleep. Excessive daytime sleepiness can result in an uncontrollable urge to sleep, especially if doing something passive, like reading, watching TV, or listening to a teacher. Naps are almost unavoidable and narcoleptics will often feel refreshed for a while after a quick nap.

Cataplexy is solely experienced by narcoleptics. Cataplexy is a sudden loss of muscle tone that can occur anytime, but is often triggered by an emotional swing, excitement, or most commonly, laughter. It is called sleep paralysis if experienced upon waking or falling asleep. Attacks can be mild where there is only a general feeling of weakness in the muscles, or severe where knees buckle, arms go limp, or the whole body collapses. The same brainstem neurons that are inactive during REM sleep become inactive during a cataplectic attack.

Hallucinations, auditory and visual, are common during episodes of sleep paralysis. Hearing sounds and voices or seeing things while feeling paralyzed can be very disturbing for people who experience it. Other senses can be involved as well. Essentially, if you experience this, you are dreaming while you are still awake.

Is it Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Narcolepsy?

Are you tired all of the time? Do you feel like you need naps or more rest than other people? Do you wake up tired and exhausted even after you’ve gotten plenty of sleep? If you’ve been struggling with long-term fatigue and exhaustion, you may be thinking that you are experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome. However, chronic fatigue syndrome is not the only disorder that can cause debilitating symptoms, like extreme tiredness. It may be possible that you are confusing the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome with narcolepsy.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and narcolepsy are very similar and yet very different at the same time. Both cause extreme tiredness, the excessive need for naps, forgetfulness, restless sleep, and muscle weakness. However, there are slight differences that can help you and your doctor determine what you’re up against.

Before either condition can be diagnosed, your doctor must check for other sleep disorders and medical problems. In fact, there is no specific test for chronic fatigue syndrome. It is simply diagnosed when everything else is ruled out.

The causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown, but are suspected to be triggered by an immune or autoimmune disorder. It is mostly diagnosed in women between the ages of 40 and 50. Symptoms include a new onset of extreme fatigue or tiredness that is not relieved by sleeping and lasts for longer than six months. The fatigue experienced can become worse after exercise that is normally tolerated by the individual. Other symptoms include headaches, forgetfulness, an inability to concentrate, lymph node tenderness, joint pain, muscle weakness, and mild fever.

Narcolepsy is also thought to be caused by an autoimmune disorder. It is usually diagnosed in teenagers or individuals in their twenties. Your doctor can give you a test for narcolepsy by performing a spinal tap and checking for low levels of a chemical that regulates wakefulness and REM sleep, called hypocretin. People with extremely low levels of hypocretin in their spinal fluid usually experience the more severe symptoms of narcolepsy. However, in some cases, high levels of hypocretin are detected, which has lead researchers to determine that the receptors for hypocretin are damaged, making it unusable by the person.

The most common symptoms of narcolepsy are extreme fatigue and tiredness, much like chronic fatigue syndrome. However, narcoleptics often experience 2-4 hours of feeling fine before they are hit with a sudden “sleep attack” or extreme muscle weakness. Other symptoms associated with narcolepsy include cataplexy, hypnopompic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. We will discuss these symptoms of narcolepsy more in depth in our next article, “Do I Have Narcolepsy?”.

Treatments for narcolepsy and chronic fatigue syndrome should be discussed with your doctor, but there are some things that you can do at home to help lessen the severity of the symptoms. Both disorders are considered to be an overreaction or under reaction of the immune system. If you think about how instinct works and why, it makes sense. There is a trigger and then stress is created as a motivator to satisfy whatever it is that is needed to survive.

Our bodies may not know how to respond appropriately to modern stressors. We are hard-wired with an instinct to survive by hunting food, eating it, avoiding danger, and reproducing. According to the Harvard Medical School, “A review of 13 studies showed that patients who tried psychologically based approaches had greater improvement in their symptoms compared with patients who received conventional medical treatment.”

Now that this link between GI disorders occurring in response to stress has been discovered, it has opened up many new options for treatment that have been very successful. Things like acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, and irritable bowel syndrome are very common complaints among people suffering from stress. In fact, studies show that these gastrointestinal problems are almost always accompanied by sleep problems like insomnia, weight loss or gain, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, brain fog, short temper, and sexual dysfunction, among other bodily responses to stress.

Part 2: Are Obesogens Making Me Fat?

Obesogens don’t let your body’s signaling system tell it when you need fat, adrenaline, or reproductive hormones. They disrupt brain development and can cause brain abnormalities that have been linked to seizure disorders, depression, attention deficit disorder, and more. They have been linked directly to immune disorders and a host of other preventable diseases. By now, hopefully, you can see how obesogens can severely impact your life, your health, and even the lives of your children.

Obesogens accumulate in your body, so over time, they become more of a health risk. Research hasn’t yet shown us how to reverse the effects of obesogens, so our best strategy at this time is to avoid them and to try to eliminate existing ones from our bodies.

Boys also have higher levels of estrogen than they should. That puts them at high risk for infertility, obesity, mood disorders, and many cancers, including cervical and breast cancer. This is the first generation of kids in history that actually have a shorter life expectancy than their parents’.

It’s time that we stop sacrificing our health for petty conveniences. Making wise choices and clearing out the chemicals that are stored in your body is very important.
