Who Is Usually Magnesium Deficient?

People with fibromyalgia, diabetes, heart conditions, anxiety disorders, depression, inflammatory diseases, and autoimmune diseases all require more magnesium than the recommended daily allowance, which is calculated for a healthy individual with no deficiencies. Any kidney disease or disorder will flush magnesium from the body. Almost all intestinal and digestive diseases and disorders cause magnesium to be poorly absorbed. As we age, our intestines lose their ability to easily absorb minerals, so our daily requirement increases with time.

My Calcium Supplement Already Has Magnesium

Calcium supplements often contain magnesium, because it is needed for absorption of calcium. However, supplementing with calcium greatly increases the need for magnesium by the body, so even if you’re taking magnesium as part of your calcium supplement, you still aren’t getting any “extra” magnesium.

The average American diet provides less than 2/3 of the amount of magnesium needed by the body each day. Saturated fat inhibits magnesium absorption. Sugar causes magnesium to be flushed by the kidneys. Soft water depletes magnesium. Phosphates in sodas and food additives attach to magnesium, making it unusable by the body.

Food additives have been processed by man and can cause oxidative stress in your body by creating free radicals, which quickly deplete magnesium. A free radical is a charged, open-ended “free” electron that is in need of an electron to steal from a cell to stabilize itself.

Think of a magnet floating through your body. It wants to stick to something or it will be unstable, flipping around and hoping to find the right charge to stick to. Normally your body can handle free radicals by using antioxidants to attach to them and safely evacuate them from the body. The problem is that we often run out of antioxidants very quickly because of the massive amounts of free radicals that we eat, or that our bodies make when we have inflammation, illness, disease or stress.

When antioxidants are not present, free radicals, instead of sticking to a molecule of vitamin C or vitamin E, stick to a healthy cell, steal its electrons, and damage the cell. This is what leads to disease, causes aging, and causes depletion of our vitamins and nutrients, including magnesium.

Additionally, all of these chemicals must be processed by the liver. While the liver is busy being flooded with chemical food additives, it does not choose to process fat. In fact, it chooses to store the fat around the organs in an attempt to protect them from free radical attack. This is why gaining weight “around your middle” is a sign of heart disease and a warning sign for diabetes.
