Vitamin C Research

Actual cases of flu, mono, lyme disease and more treated with intravenous vitamin C.

Commentary by Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD

(OMNS Sept 3, 2014) My ongoing relationship with vitamin C now spans a full 20 years, when I first met Dr. Hal Huggins, a pioneering dentist who opened my eyes to a wide array of clinical approaches to different diseases with hitherto unheard-of clinical results at his clinic in Colorado Springs. I can honestly say that my first visit to his clinic began the most meaningful part of my medical education. Nothing has been the same since. My office where I practiced adult cardiology ended up being shuttered shortly after that first visit. And I have never looked back.

Could healing your gut also heal your disease?

In our article “Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases Caused by a Leaky Gut?” we described how a leaky gut happens, what diseases it causes, and what to avoid to keep your gut healthy. “Refined flours and highly processed foods are really hard on the epithelial lining of the gut. High glycemic index foods, dairy products, and gluten are damaging. High chronic caffeine use, excessive alcohol consumption, and overuse of antibiotics are bad for the epithelial lining. All of these things weaken the bonds between the cells letting particles escape.

Immunomodulator Supplements – Normalizing the Immune System

Calm Autoimmune Responses or Strengthen a Weak Immune System.

Immunomodulator drugs are relatively new and have just about “cured” many people suffering from autoimmune diseases or compromised immune systems. Immunomodulators are unique in that they adjust to each person’s immune problems. If a person has low immunity, immunomodulators boost the immune system to an optimal level. If a person is autoimmune, or has an overactive immune system, then immunomodulators decrease the action and production of immune cells, regulating the immune system. An interesting fact about immunomodulators is that if a person with a normal immune system takes them, there is basically no effect.

Vitamin C works on several levels to eliminate viruses, bacteria and toxins from the body, thus reducing fever and symptoms. It also plays a vital role in strengthening and nourishing the body so to a point where it can handle invaders. This can help you to be sure that febrile seizures are not facilitated by the body’s weakened state. Learn how vitamin C affects each invader and body system to help prevent seizures caused by fever. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, enters cells and interrupts the process by which viruses multiply. It attaches to viruses and destroys their protective coating that disguises them from our immune systems and protects them from our bodily defenses. It keeps the virus particles from producing nucleic acid, which they need to create new coatings and new viruses.

Why Vitamin C Works on Colds and the Flu

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

There is just about nothing more miserable than a bad cold or the flu. Colds can be just as hard on your body as the flu, depending on what type of viruses are invading and how much damage they are doing. The actual “flu” is caused by the virus influenza A or B. A “cold” can be caused by over 200 different viruses, which is one reason that it is very difficult to treat.

How Do Viruses and Bacteria Make Me Sick?

Viruses and bacteria can make us sick in a few different ways. Most bacteria do not harm you and can actually help your body. The bacteria that make you sick use your body to live and reproduce. They drain your body’s resources and create a lot of waste products that are toxic. These toxic wastes are produced in the form of free radicals.

Viruses invade cells, reproducing inside of them, and reprogramming them so that your own cells make more of the virus. This destroys cells and can make you very sick very fast.

How Does Vitamin C Combat Bacterial Waste?

As we mentioned before, bacteria create waste in the form of free radicals. Think of free radicals as weak, unstable molecules travelling around in your body looking for an electron to steal. They need another electron to stabilize, so they attack healthy cells and steal their electron. This causes the once healthy cell to turn into a free radical itself. This causes a chain reaction, or cascade effect, that can be very damaging and make us very sick.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals by giving them the electron that they’re looking for. This does not turn the vitamin C into a free radical itself, because it is stable whether it is carrying a free radical or not. Vitamin C is considered to be a “free radical scavenger” that mops up excess free radicals and clears them from the body, preventing cellular damage and sickness.

How Does Vitamin C Protect Us From Viruses?

Viruses use our own cells against us, reprogramming our DNA to create more of the virus. A virus is essentially a parasite. It has a protein coating that protects it from being recognized by our immune systems until it has caused enough damage to finally alert our bodies to the damage that it is causing.

Vitamin C removes this protective protein while the virus is still in the bloodstream, before it gains cell entry. This allows our own immune systems to recognize the virus and attack it. Vitamin C also binds with the virus diminishing its ability to produce the chemical that it needs to reproduce. If a virus does enter a cell, it will be unable to reproduce.

How Much Vitamin C Do I Need?

The amount that you need is directly proportionate to the amount of damage, sickness or disease that is in your body. In other words, the worse you feel, the more you need. If you feel fine, the daily amount that you should get is very low. With your doctor’s consent, you can take doses of vitamin C every few hours until you hit “bowel tolerance”. If stomach upset occurs, or if you are worried about the acidity of vitamin C, use buffered vitamin C powder. You should not experience any stomach discomfort until you have consumed enough vitamin C for your condition.

Boosting your immune system can help you avoid things like colds and the flu, which is important this time of year.

What Causes Chronic Inflammation?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Inflammation can be the underlying cause of many diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune disease, and more. Learning how inflammation happens and which vitamins help to fight it can give us the power to prevent many chronic and disabling diseases.

A lot of times, our diets are to blame for chronic inflammatory conditions. Flavor enhancing chemicals, anti-caking ingredients, thickening agents, hydrogenated oils, and many other food additives are structurally identical to the compounds that are supposed to activate our immune systems into stimulating an inflammatory response.

A lot of food additives are actually neurotoxins, like monosodium glutamate, and are added to inflame the brain, putting it into “fight or flight” mode. This produces a heightened sense of smell and taste, but can also unwanted side effects, like migraines, anxiety, sensory processing problems, seizures, scarring in the brain, and more.

Hormones are given to animals that are put into our food supply so that they grow bigger and faster than naturally raised animals. They produce more milk, lay more eggs, and mature at a faster rate than we’ve ever seen in history. There is no regulation on how much hormone the animals receive, so over time they’ve been given more and more to keep up with the demand of the fast food industry. These hormones are passed to us and react with our own hormonal systems, affecting our reproductive organs, thyroid function, adrenal glands, and more. All of our body systems are affected by hormonal changes.

Having these chemicals and hormones in our diets causes our immune systems to constantly overreact to invaders; allergens, toxins, bacteria and infection, whatever it comes into contact with. This produces a constant state of inflammation that we may not even be aware of until we experience serious health problems. An overactive immune system can lead to behavioral and psychological problems, inflammatory diseases, chronic fatigue, obesity, organ damage, nerve damage, chronic pain and more.

All of this chronic inflammation and artificial input can cause your immune system to attack healthy tissues of your body while “missing” viruses and other health threats. Inflammation flushes your system of its vitamin and mineral stores at an alarming rate, leaving you susceptible to vitamin deficiencies that cause even more problems for your body. Eating natural, certified organic meat, fruits and vegetables can give your body a fighting chance.

Supplementing with vitamins that are depleted by inflammation can help you get on your way to a healthy body and mind. Vitamins A, B6, C, and D are great for fighting inflammation and replenishing vitamin stores. Antioxidants help to flush unwanted toxins from the body, strengthen and calm the immune and hormonal systems, and regulate the inflammatory response.

Vitamin C Saves Man Dying of Viral Pneumonia
October 8, 2010
By Jeffrey Dach

Allan Smith, a New Zealand Dairy farmer, contracted Swine Flu while away on vacation in Fiji. When he returned home, the flu quickly evolved into severe pneumonia which left him in a coma on Life Support in the Intensive Care Unit. Chest Xrays showed the lungs were completely filled with fluid with an “opaque” appearance called “white out”. After three weeks of this, Allan’s doctors asked the family permission to turn off the machines and let him die. Allan’s wife Sonia had a brother with some medical knowledge, so he stepped in and said, “you haven’t tried everything, You have got to try high dose IV vitamin C on Allan”. At first, the doctors resisted, saying it was useless. Next, the three sons weighed in with a persuasive argument to try the IV vitamin C, saying there was nothing to lose.
