Vitamin C Research

Actual cases of flu, mono, lyme disease and more treated with intravenous vitamin C.

Commentary by Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD

(OMNS Sept 3, 2014) My ongoing relationship with vitamin C now spans a full 20 years, when I first met Dr. Hal Huggins, a pioneering dentist who opened my eyes to a wide array of clinical approaches to different diseases with hitherto unheard-of clinical results at his clinic in Colorado Springs. I can honestly say that my first visit to his clinic began the most meaningful part of my medical education. Nothing has been the same since. My office where I practiced adult cardiology ended up being shuttered shortly after that first visit. And I have never looked back.

2013 Flu

Know the Risks, Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment for This Year's Top Illnesses

2013 has brought three different flulike illnesses that have many people running for the hand sanitizer and scrambling to get their hands on a flu vaccine. A very aggressive flu, a new norovirus, and the worst whooping cough outbreak that we’ve seen since 1955 are gripping the nation. Learn about what is going around, how to protect yourself, and how to recognize symptoms early on.

This year’s predominant flu is a very aggressive H3N2 strain, which luckily is well matched to the current flu vaccine, according to the CDC. The more common H1N1 strain is not being seen very often, but is also included in the vaccine, along with a “B” strain of the flu. There are two “B” strains, one of which is well matched to the flu vaccine this year, the other is not.

Vitamin C Can Prevent Febrile Seizures

Protect your child from Febrile Seizures with the best vitamin C.

Vitamin C works on several levels to eliminate viruses, bacteria and toxins from the body, thus reducing fever and symptoms. It also plays a vital role in strengthening and nourishing the body so to a point where it can handle invaders. This can help you to be sure that febrile seizures are not facilitated by the body’s weakened state. Learn how vitamin C affects each invader and body system to help prevent seizures caused by fever. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, enters cells and interrupts the process by which viruses multiply. It attaches to viruses and destroys their protective coating that disguises them from our immune systems and protects them from our bodily defenses. It keeps the virus particles from producing nucleic acid, which they need to create new coatings and new viruses.

Vitamin C Saves Man Dying of Viral Pneumonia

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

Here at Wholesale Nutrition, we highly value valid research and news articles, such as these, where someone’s life and health is improved or saved by vitamins or supplements.

We are particularly interested in studies using buffered vitamin C, which people can take at home, and IV vitamin C that can be given intravenously in high enough doses to make a difference in the most severe cases.

We hope you find it as fascinating as we do!

Vitamin C Saves Man Dying of Viral Pneumonia

By Jeffrey Dach

Allan Smith, a New Zealand Dairy farmer, contracted Swine Flu while away on vacation in Fiji. When he returned home, the flu quickly evolved into severe pneumonia which left him in a coma on Life Support in the Intensive Care Unit. Chest Xrays showed the lungs were completely filled with fluid with an “opaque” appearance called “white out”. After three weeks of this, Allan’s doctors asked the family permission to turn off the machines and let him die. Allan’s wife Sonia had a brother with some medical knowledge, so he stepped in and said, “you haven’t tried everything, You have got to try high dose IV vitamin C on Allan”. At first, the doctors resisted, saying it was useless. Next, the three sons weighed in with a persuasive argument to try the IV vitamin C, saying there was nothing to lose.

Health Authorities Now Admit Severe Side Effects of Vaccination
Swine Flu, Pandemrix and Narcolepsy

by Karin Munsterhjelm-Ahumada, M.D.
(OMNS, March 20, 2012) The swine flu pandemic of 2009 was caused by a type A influenza (H1N1) virus. This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because many of the genes of this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. The H1N1 virus is genetically similar to the 1918 pandemic virus, as determined from victimes of the latter who were buried, and later disinterred, in Svalbard. It was responsible for most of the outbreaks up until 1956 and then disappeared.

However, this new virus was actually quite different from the typical swine flu viruses. This virus first caused illness in Mexico and the United States in March and April, 2009. This novel H1N1 flu spread from person to person, unlike typical swine flu. In 2009 vaccines were being developed for the prevention of swine flu in humans.

On 11 June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the swine flu had developed into a full scale world epidemic – a pandemic alert to Phase 6. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO, commented on the situation in a somewhat ambiguous way. While stressing that the swine flu had reached a serious pandemic level, she declared later in the same statement that the illness seemed to be mild and that most of the patients would recover without medical intervention.

The world chose to listen to the first part of her message.

Two pharmaceutical companies GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Novartis had, under considerable time pressure, developed a vaccine against the swine flu. Since the cultivation of an adequate amount of virus to generate the vaccine requires time, GSK and Novartis decided to formulate a weaker vaccine but strenghten it with an adjuvant that contains squalene. Immunologic adjuvants are substances, administered in conjunction with a vaccine, that stimulate the immune system and increase the response to the vaccine Although squalene is a natural substance found in methabolic pathways of the body, its inclusion in a vaccine is controversial and it is not in use in the USA.

On 25 September 2009, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) approved Pandemrix, the swine flu vaccine produced by GSK and Focetria produced by Novartis. The vaccine would be ready for use that October.

In Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland, the authorities explicitly set the goal of vaccinating the entire population In this respect, it is of interest that the governments of these countries, already before the outbreak of the swine flu, had concluded an agreement with GSK, according to which they were assured the delivery of pandemic vaccines, if needed. In addition, the contract stipulated that, in a situation characterized as a pandemic by the WHO, the same Nordic countries would have ten days to decide whether or not to accept delivery of the vaccine in question. Hence, the purpose of the agreement was to assure that the entire populations of these countries would receive vaccinations. Finally, the contract protected GSK from any claim for financial compensation in case the delivered vaccine would have any side effects.

When WHO declared the swine flu to be a Phase 6 pandemic, the agreement referred to above was automatically activated.

Mass vaccination started in Finland and Sweden in October 2009. In order to cover the largest possible percentage of the population, the authorities initiated an enormous public relations campaign, which could be described in terms of a “moral persuasion.” Solidarity became the slogan: “Be vaccinated to protect your fellow citizens.” Those who questioned the vaccination program (small groups of vaccine opponents or just people who were hesitant) were looked upon with disapproval.

In contrast to these vaccine – enthusiastic countries, the politics of vaccination within the rest of the European Union varied immensely among its member states. Poland, for example, decided not to buy vaccines at all due to the strict agreement conditions required by the pharmaceutical companies. Denmark’s order covered only “risk groups”.

The expected second wave of the influenza never appeared. The epidemic gradually declined during the first half of 2010. The same year, on 10 August, WHO officially declared the end of the epidemic. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) stated that the swine flu was less dangerous and had a lower mortality rate than the seasonal influenza. Thus, apparently the swine flu would not have been a dangerous epidemic even without the mass vaccination. Interestingly, also that same year, vitamin D was shown to prevent influenza in children. (1)

In Sweden, 60% of the population had been vaccinated, while in Finland 50% was covered. In contrast, the figures in Germany and Poland were only 8 and 0% respectively. In the history of Swedish health care this pandemic campaign amounted to one of the most expensive ever. Enormous amounts of taxpayer money were at stake.

Meanwhile, the media had become silent on this issue ; there was no further discussion about the swine flu anymore.

Then the blow came:

“The absolutely worst thing that could happen,” commented Richard Bergström, the Director – General of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, EFPIA. “The worst nightmare of both the industry and the health authorities is an illness that turns out to be mild, while the vaccine that was supposed to prevent a dangerous epidemic causes a severe side effect that was previously unknown.”

In August 2010, Finland reported an increased occurrence of narcolepsy in children and youngsters vaccinated with Pandemrix. On 1 September 2010, Finland stopped all Pandemrix vaccinations.

Narcolepsy is a severe chronic neurologic disease that not only results in a disabling fatigue, which typically results in the patient falling asleep anywhere and at any time. It might also lead to panic attacks and a state of exhaustion. For many, the worst consequences are the symptoms of cataplexy. This condition causes the narcolepsy patient, when expressing strong feelings such as laughter or crying, to suddenly lose muscular control. The legs give way, speech gets slurred, the gaze goes unfocused and the person gives the impression of being drunk. In some patients, frightening hallucinations appear when falling asleep or waking up.

On 1 September 2011, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) admitted, that for Finnish children and youngsters age 4-19, there was a new and obvious connection between Pandemrix and narcolepsy. As stated in THL’s press release, “The increased risk associated with vaccination amounted to six cases of narcolepsy per 100,000 persons vaccinated in the 4-19 age group during the eight months following vaccination. This was 12.7 times the risk of a person in the same age group who had not been vaccinated.” This statement was made almost exactly two years after the THL’s earlier statement made in the midst of the swine flu hysteria that everyone should be vaccinated with Pandemrix and that it would be safe. In that original statement, the director of the THL emphasized that the squalene adjuvant could increase the side effects of the vaccine to some extent. However, he stated, these side effects would not be dangerous.

In Sweden, at least 150 children are now suffering from narcolepsy caused by Pandemrix vaccine. In Finland, the number is approximately 100. In both countries the number is probably growing. Narcolepsy is a disease with lifetime consequences, and the risk that Pandremix may have caused other neurological illnesses has not yet been excluded. Many have already began to compare this tragedy with the thalidomide catastrophe.

No European countries had a particularly high rate of deaths due to the swine flue. Germany had the same death rate as Sweden, which was 0.31/100 000, although Sweden vaccinated 60% and Germany only 8%. This implies that the vaccine did little to prevent deaths. The responsible authorities have not yet commented on this matter of fact.

Last year the Finnish government promised full compensation for those who have developed narcolepsy as a consequence of the vaccination. While Sweden did, indeed, follow the Finnish THL in admitting the connection between the vaccine and the disease, the Swedish authorities have not yet decided whether and how to provide appropriate compensation.

In February 2012, Svenska Dagbladet, a widely read newspaper in Sweden, presented an informative and accurate series of articles on this theme. They describe some of the affected children narrating how difficult it is to live with narcolepsy

According to the authorities, much research is still underway concerning the details of the vaccine injury. Taking the pressure from the public and the affected families into account, it will be difficult for them to avoid carrying out a thorough investigation. Let’s hope so.

Does Vitamin C Cure a Stomach Virus?

Friday, February 17th, 2012

After a lot of research, we’ve discovered just how viruses work in the body and how vitamin C, in particular, can help to eliminate them and relieve the symptoms that they cause. We found a lot of conflicting information, from “vitamin C does not help with viruses at all” to “vitamin C kills the virus directly when it hits your stomach”. So, we decided to exclusively look at clinical trials and expert reports to clear this up.

Technically, the “stomach flu” or “stomach virus” is gastroenteritis. This is the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, involving the stomach and/or intestines, resulting in diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and possibly vomiting. Gastroenteritis can be viral or bacterial, or it can be caused by allergies, toxins, parasites, or medications. For simplicity, we are going to discuss the most common cause; viruses.

Anti-viral drugs work by inhibiting the enzymes that allow viruses to replicate. These enzymes are called “neuraminidases” and they are needed to force a host cell to release them, which would enable them to spread to more, healthy cells. Vitamin C does the same thing. It inhibits neuraminidases, forcing them to be held captive until the body has time to produce antibodies against it. So, technically vitamin C and anti-viral drugs do not “kill” a virus, but they keep it from being allowed to spread and cause more symptoms.

There are three main benefits to using something like vitamin C powder to treat gastroenteritis instead of anti-viral drugs. One, vitamin C doesn’t have any detrimental side effects. The reported side effects for the most common and considered safest anti-viral drug include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, cardiac arrhythmia, seizures, aggravation of diabetes, hemorrhagic colitis, epidermal necrolysis, hallucinations, abnormal behavior, self harming behaviors, suicidal thoughts and actions, and impaired consciousness. Sadly, most of these side effects are most commonly seen in children, enough for some countries to ban its use in children and teenagers.

Secondly, mineral vitamin C powder, like C-Salts, helps to replace and maintain electrolytes lost through vomiting and diarrhea. Mixing electrolytes with sugar, chemicals used in artificial sweeteners, food colorings, and other ingredients can render the electrolytes useless. Minerals, such as zinc, also have anti-viral properties and work with vitamin C to make the body’s T-cells more effective. This boosts immunity and speeds the process of creating antibodies against the virus.

Lastly, vitamin C (sodium ascorbate) can safely be taken in large enough amounts to not only keep viruses from replicating during the first 24 hours, but for many days after the initial viral infection begins. With anti-viral medications, you can only take them very early on and then not again. Vitamin C has anti-viral properties even in the late stages of viral infection.

Most viruses will “run their course” and be eliminated from the body in 2-5 days. Vitamin C can help to lessen the symptoms of a viral stomach bug by eliminating the inflammation of the intestines and stomach. It is this inflammation that causes the worst symptoms of the stomach virus, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Many people believe that you have to let the diarrhea and vomiting continue to “get the virus out”, but that simply isn’t true. The virus is causing the inflammation that causes these symptoms. It is only eliminated when your body produces antibodies against it and kills it off. Controlling the inflammation and replication of the virus can help you to stay relatively unaffected by the virus while it runs its course.

How to Maximize Your Vitamin C Benefits

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Learning how to correctly take your vitamin C can help you to increase the benefits that you get from it. Vitamin C will give you protection from scurvy at minimal levels, but won’t necessarily provide you with symptom relief or protection from major diseases unless it is taken at a high enough level. It’s hard to say what the correct “daily requirement” of vitamin C is because everyone has a different level of stress or disease in their body. Therefore, learning how to find the right dosage for your condition and your body can be greatly beneficial.

In general, bowel tolerance of ascorbic acid is proportionate to the toxicity of your disease. In other words, you won’t eliminate excess vitamin C until it’s out of things to correct in your body. Therefore, a daily dose when you’re healthy can range anywhere from 1 to 20 grams per day, depending on the condition and need of your body. One study showed that people with influenza (the flu) or mononucleosis (mono), could take up to 200 grams of vitamin C daily without stomach discomfort or diarrhea. In fact, for severe illnesses such as these, marked improvement was not shown until the dosage of ascorbic acid reached near the bowel tolerance level. The reason that you may not feel better when taking smaller doses of vitamin C is that it is quickly destroyed by injured tissues, disease, and stress. Think of it as trying to wash mud off of your arm with only a few drops of water. It may get smeared around, but the mud is still there. Only with larger and larger amounts of water would you be able to clean off the mud.

Vitamin C works by scavenging free radicals produced by stress, infection, inflammation, germs, bacteria, illness and disease. Not only do diseases and injuries cause damaging free radicals to form, they also lead to the formation of other diseases. Almost every disease is caused by and/or produces free radicals. Infection, heart disease, cancer, burns, trauma, aging, allergies, and autoimmune diseases are all included.

Taking vitamin C daily can vastly reduce your chances of developing a giant list of health conditions. Vitamin C is very sensitive to stress and is generally the first vitamin to be depleted by it. Without enough vitamin C in your system daily, stress can take its toll on your immune system very quickly. Vitamin C is known to bring balance to an overactive or weakened immune system. It does the same for your stress response, helping to control anxiety, overproduction of cortisol (stress hormone), and inflammation.

Many people don’t realize that vitamin C is required by our bodies daily to maintain cartilage, bones and teeth. It is also necessary for producing collagen, absorbing iron, and controlling cholesterol levels. Our bodies go from growing and developing to breaking down and aging. Our cells and connective tissues, even bone, are always regenerating. If enough vitamin C isn’t available for the production of collagen and elastin, our bodies will improvise by using hard, inflexible cholesterol plaques to repair tiny tears and injuries. This is how arteries harden, joints become more prone to damage, and wrinkles form.

Talk with your doctor about supplementing with the best vitamin C, sodium ascorbate vitamin C powder. This highly absorbable, non-acidic form of vitamin C is the most economical and easiest way to get your perfect daily dose of vitamin C.

Is The Swine Flu Vaccine Safe For My Kids?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Most cases of swine flu in the US, based on population rates, continue to be contracted disproportionately by the infant to 24-year age group. Right now this demographic alone accounts for 80% of all confirmed and probable cases that are being reported by the CDC. 37% of these cases affect the infant to 4-year age group. This data is troubling and parents have a valid reason for concern.

Starting this Fall, the swine flu, or Influenza A (H1N1) vaccine will be available here in the US. Although this vaccine is virtually untested, the government is evidently confident that it is safe enough to be readily administered. We are all familiar with the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. But should my kid really be in line for this shot immediately?

Parents of children, especially those with autistic kids, are acutely aware of what vaccines could mean for their sons and daughters. Many are concerned about routine vaccinations, but you should be particularly aware of the possible dangers of the swine flu vaccine. This vaccine has been rushed to market, so to speak, in order to meet the public and government demand for protection from the swine flu. GlaxoSmithKline says that “clinical trials will be limited” due to government demands and that “additional studies will therefore be required and conducted after the vaccine is made available”.

Trials in the US are expected to begin on August 17th by testing the vaccine on 12,000 children between the ages of 3 and 8. Then, 60 to 80 million doses are expected to be administered by mid-September. Officials have admittedly “guessed” at the proper dosage to rush the vaccine to market by the time school has started. They will not know of the vaccine’s effectiveness or side effects until the initial wave of testing is complete, but they do expect that two vaccinations will be necessary.

The swine flu vaccine is made in exactly the same way as other flu vaccines, save one meaningful difference – this vaccine will contain adjuvants. Adjuvants are controversial, experimental additives that serve to strengthen the human body’s immune response. Research shows that there are numerous dangerous side effects and undesirable conditions that can result from taking adjuvants. The approved use of these questionable additives in the swine flu vaccine seems to be a direct result of concerns over supply only, in that, adjuvants will help to stretch a limited global quantity of shots that will be available to fight the pandemic. Perhaps the real concern should be focused on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine and not on the supply. It is worth noting that there are currently no US approved vaccinations containing adjuvants. No kidding.

Admittedly, the US would rather not have adjuvants in vaccines because it might give citizens a reason to avoid them – here’s why. In 1976, adjuvants were used in the swine flu vaccine. Some people had an immunopathological reaction, which lead to their death. About 500 other people became permanently paralyzed by the neuromuscular disorder named Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). GBS is an immune response to foreign antigens which attacks the nervous system. It results in muscle paralysis, sensory disturbances, and sometimes cardiac arrest.

GBS is normally a rare side-effect seen after an influenza vaccine. With the swine flu vaccine in 1976, it is believed that because the adjuvants increased the body’s response to the vaccination, the occurrence of GBS rose from a normal level of one in 1,000,000 to one in 105,000.

Parents of children affected by autism are understandably more concerned about immunizations that could cause an autoimmune response like Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is not known for sure that the adjuvants are the exact cause, but they were banned from immunizations in the US shortly afterwards so one must presume that some sort of correlation exists. Because our immunizations are largely produced in other countries and in an effort to keep the vaccine readily available, the US is allowing adjuvants this time, as a one-off occurrence. They are also protecting themselves and the vaccine manufacturers from lawsuits that may occur as a result of distributing this barely tested, questionable vaccine because they are faced with the pandemic status. Big red flag.

With all of the current hype and confusion surrounding the swine flu, it can be difficult to make the right decision for our kids. Furthermore, it is impossible to be informed without information. The most prudent approach parents can take may be to observe and be patient. The swine flu has been described as a mild flu which has been less of a problem and caused many less deaths than the regular seasonal flu that we see from year to year. Subjecting your child to an untested vaccine as a preventative measure against a mild flu, may not be the best answer. At least not yet.

With that being said, unique situations call for unique solutions. If an outbreak of swine flu occurs in your child’s school, the vaccine may be the safest option and sooner rather than later. But if an outbreak occurs in the state neighboring yours, it may not be necessary to line your child up for a shot tomorrow. Point being, it can be critical to be prudent in times like these. But not unlike any health related issue, you should always seek the advice of a physician and/or pediatrician when deciding on the safest methods of swine flu prevention for you and your family.

Many parents of children, especially those with autism, are looking for safe alternatives to vaccines. Vitamin C is one of these safe alternatives. Vitamin C helps your body to resist all flus and infections. In high doses, it has also been found to be extremely reliable in eliminating and reducing flu symptoms once contracted. Taking vitamin C powder is the best way to get your vitamin C. Or, for those who can’t handle its acidity, a buffered form of Vitamin C may be a better solution because it is easier on your digestive system.

Swine Flu Pandemic Notes: Take More Vitamin C

Swine flu has just met the criteria to be deemed a pandemic. A pandemic classification is given when an infectious disease spreads further and at a faster pace than anticipated, from country to country, or even worldwide. The World Health Organization considers the spread of swine flu unstoppable. People desperately want answers, but we have very limited information at this point. So, what can you do to protect yourself and your family?

Some people are lucky and get a mild case of the swine flu with very few complications. At this point, the death toll is small but could dramatically increase if the virus changes. We need to be prepared. Pharmaceutical companies feverishly try to make a swine flu pandemic vaccine, but admit that it can take many months to get and distribute. We do not have to idly sit by and wait. There are some things we could be doing individually to prepare our bodies for what they might come in contact with.

Vitamin C has a proven track record for helping our defenses take on influenza viruses. To understand how it works, you have to understand free radicals. Damaging free radicals are produced in your body when you have injuries, allergies, autoimmune diseases, etc. Free radicals are aggravated compounds in need of another electron to complete the pair that they need to be stable. They damage cells that they steal electrons from.

Vitamin C is known to many nutritionists as a free radical scavenger. Antioxidants such as vitamin C are effective because they are willing to give up their own electrons to free radicals. When a free radical gains an electron from an antioxidant it no longer needs to attack the cell and the chain reaction of oxidation is broken.

Free radicals cause and contribute to the inflammation, symptoms and even death from infectious diseases, like the swine flu. By flushing free radicals out of the body, you can control the symptoms of the swine flu and the inflammation that can lead to death.

How do you know how much vitamin C to take? If you are well, you can take vitamin C powder in 1 gram doses about every hour until you determine your bowel tolerance. The optimal amount is anywhere from 2-15 grams per day but this can vary greatly from person to person.

If you have the flu, or are experiencing symptoms of swine flu, you may consider increasing your dosage. If mega doses of vitamin C powder do not reverse symptoms within a few hours, or if you have problems with diarrhea, you may want to try intravenous vitamin C (as sodium ascorbate). Keep in mind that it is good to know your normal bowel tolerance of vitamin C before you get sick so that you know if diarrhea is caused by the flu or the dosage of vitamin C.

If you have enough vitamin C in your body to combat the free radicals produced by the swine flu, then you could potentially cure yourself without any harmful chemicals or drugs. More importantly, using Vitamin C powder daily can help prevent contracting swine flu by protecting you and your family from the damaging and sometimes lethal effects of free radicals.
