Vitamin C Research

Actual cases of flu, mono, lyme disease and more treated with intravenous vitamin C.

Commentary by Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD

(OMNS Sept 3, 2014) My ongoing relationship with vitamin C now spans a full 20 years, when I first met Dr. Hal Huggins, a pioneering dentist who opened my eyes to a wide array of clinical approaches to different diseases with hitherto unheard-of clinical results at his clinic in Colorado Springs. I can honestly say that my first visit to his clinic began the most meaningful part of my medical education. Nothing has been the same since. My office where I practiced adult cardiology ended up being shuttered shortly after that first visit. And I have never looked back.

Vitamin C Saves Man Dying of Viral Pneumonia

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

Here at Wholesale Nutrition, we highly value valid research and news articles, such as these, where someone’s life and health is improved or saved by vitamins or supplements.

We are particularly interested in studies using buffered vitamin C, which people can take at home, and IV vitamin C that can be given intravenously in high enough doses to make a difference in the most severe cases.

We hope you find it as fascinating as we do!

Vitamin C Saves Man Dying of Viral Pneumonia

Allan Smith, a New Zealand Dairy farmer, contracted Swine Flu while away on vacation in Fiji. When he returned home, the flu quickly evolved into severe pneumonia which left him in a coma on Life Support in the Intensive Care Unit. Chest Xrays showed the lungs were completely filled with fluid with an “opaque” appearance called “white out”. After three weeks of this, Allan’s doctors asked the family permission to turn off the machines and let him die. Allan’s wife Sonia had a brother with some medical knowledge, so he stepped in and said, “you haven’t tried everything, You have got to try high dose IV vitamin C on Allan”. At first, the doctors resisted, saying it was useless. Next, the three sons weighed in with a persuasive argument to try the IV vitamin C, saying there was nothing to lose.

INTRAVENOUS VITAMIN C and CANCER
“…it takes much more than logic and clear-cut demonstrations to overcome the inertia and dogma of established thought.” — Irving Stone

Irving Stone was an early thinker and writer about vitamin C (its scientific name is ascorbic acid). He knew it would be an uphill battle to change the way the medical profession viewed vitamin C. While most doctors accept that scurvy is a vitamin C deficiency illness, few have made the rather humongous jump to seeing high dose intravenous vitamin C as a major player in the management of cancer.

There is actually a wide spectrum of medical uses for vitamin C. Evidence exists documenting it as the best antiviral agent now available … IF used at the proper dose. Vitamin C can neutralize and eliminate a wide range of toxins. Vitamin C will enhance host resistance, greatly augmenting the immune system’s ability to neutralize bacterial and fungal infections. Now the National Institutes of Health has published evidence demonstrating vitamin C’s anti-cancer properties. With so many medical benefits, why do so few doctors know of them?

One explanation stems from ascorbic acid’s designation as a “vitamin.” Consider Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary’s definition of vitamin: A general term for a number of unrelated organic substances that occur in many foods in small amounts that are necessary in trace amounts for the normal metabolic functioning of the body. As a vitamin, only a minuscule 60 mg of ascorbic acid is needed to prevent the emergence of scurvy symptoms. As a medical treatment for cancer and life-threatening infections and toxic exposures, tens of thousands of milligrams of ascorbic acid must be administered, often by the intravenous (IV) as well as the oral route.

The Center’s founder, Dr. Hugh Riordan, was a true scientist who believed in the power of scientific measurement over dogma. With the establishment of The Center in 1975, he routinely checked plasma vitamin C levels in chronically ill patients. He found these sick patients to be consistently low in their plasma C levels. Interestingly enough, the cancer patients he was seeing had VERY LOW vitamin C reserves. This matched scientific literature documenting low vitamin C levels in cancer patients. Cancer cells were actively taking up vitamin C in a way that depleted tissue reserves of C.

PET scans are commonly ordered by oncologists to evaluate their cancer patients for metastases (cancer spread to other organs). What is actually injected into the patient at the start of the scan is radioactive glucose. Cancer cells are anaerobic obligates, which means they depend upon glucose as their primary source of metabolic fuel. Cancer cells employ transport mechanisms called glucose transporters to actively pull in glucose.

In the vast majority of animals, vitamin C is synthesized from glucose in only four metabolic steps. Hence, the molecular shape of vitamin C is remarkably similar to glucose. (Figure 1) Cancer cells will actively transport vitamin C into themselves, possibly because they mistake it for glucose. Another plausible explanation is that they are using the vitamin C as an antioxidant. Regardless, the vitamin C accumulates in cancer cells.

If large amounts of vitamin C are presented to cancer cells, large amounts will be absorbed. In these unusually large concentrations, the antioxidant vitamin C will start behaving as a pro-oxidant as it interacts with intracellular copper and iron. This chemical interaction produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide.

Because cancer cells are relatively low in an intracellular anti-oxidant enzyme called catalase, the high dose vitamin C induction of peroxide will continue to build up until it eventually lyses the cancer cell from the inside out! This effectively makes high dose IVC a non-toxic chemotherapeutic agent that can be given in conjunction with conventional cancer treatments. Based on the work of several vitamin C pioneers before him, Dr. Riordan was able to prove that vitamin C was selectively toxic to cancer cells if given intravenously. This research was recently reproduced and published by Dr. Mark Levine at the National Institutes of Health.

As feared by many oncologists, small doses may actually help the cancer cells because small amounts of vitamin C may help the cancer cells arm themselves against the free-radical induced damage caused by chemotherapy and radiation. Only markedly higher doses of vitamin C will selectively build up as peroxide in the cancer cells to the point of acting in a manner similar to chemotherapy. These tumor-toxic dosages can only be obtained by intravenous administration.

Over a span of 15 years of vitamin C research, Dr. Riordan’s RECNAC (cancer spelled backwards) research team generated 20 published papers on vitamin C and cancer. RECNAC even inspired its second cancer research institute, known as RECNAC II, at the University of Puerto Rico. This group recently published an excellent paper in Integrative Cancer Therapies, titled “Orthomolecular Oncology Review: Ascorbic Acid and Cancer 25 Years Later.” RECNAC data has shown that vitamin C is toxic to tumor cells without sacrificing the performance of chemotherapy.

Intravenous vitamin C also does more than just kill cancer cells. It boosts immunity. It can stimulate collagen formation to help the body wall off the tumor. It inhibits hyaluronidase, an enzyme that tumors use to metastasize and invade other organs throughout the body. It induces apoptosis to help program cancer cells into dying early. It corrects the almost universal scurvy in cancer patients. Cancer patients are tired, listless, bruise easily, and have a poor appetite. They don’t sleep well and have a low threshold for pain. This adds up to a very classic picture of scurvy that generally goes unrecognized by their conventional physicians.

When Center cancer patients receive IVC, they report that their pain level goes down, and that they are better able to tolerate their chemotherapy. They bounce back quicker since the IVC reduces the toxicity of the chemotherapy and radiation without compromising their cancer cell killing effects. IVC is complementary to oncologic care. IVC is not “either/or” – it’s a good “both/and” proposition. IVC can help cancer patients withstand the effects of their traditional therapies, heal faster, be more resilient to infection, develop a better appetite, and remain more active overall. These things promote a better response to their cancer therapy.

IVC has been used for three decades here at The Center. There have been no serious complications, but there are a couple of potential complications that need to be screened for. Because vitamin C enhances iron absorption, iron overload must be ruled out. The high sodium load of IVC can create a fluid overload in a patient with congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency or failure. We also check our patients for G6PD deficiency (an enzyme used to maintain stability of the red blood cell membranes). Although many physicians worry that large doses of vitamin C may cause kidney stones, we have rarely seen the phenomenon, and several huge clinical trials in the medical literature refute this misconception.

To summarize, most organisms make their own vitamin C. When they are under stress, either by illness or injury, Mother Nature has provided them with a means to facilitate healing: they synthesize more ascorbic acid. As a result, they are in less pain, they remain active, they can sleep, and they have a better appetite: all functions which promote healing.

Dr. Riordan once said that here at The Center, we don’t treat cancer… we treat people who happen to have cancer. IVC is a tool that allows our Center physicians to harness a healing mechanism that our human ancestors lost long ago: the ability to dramatically increase tissue levels of vitamin C. Research shows that the astonishingly high levels achievable only by IVC not only help fight the risk of infection and the pain of metastases, they actually aid in the defeat of the cancer cells themselves, through a very elegant mechanism that does no harm to healthy cells. It’s a discovery that the medical world is only beginning to discover.

Why Do I Need Vitamin C?

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Vitamin C does a lot more than help you to get over or avoid the common cold and flu. It is a potent antioxidant that is critical in helping your body to carry out many of its normal processes. Since vitamin C can only be consumed through diet or vitamins and supplements, it is necessary to consider what you could be doing to your body by failing to get enough.

Vitamin C is responsible for the function and repair of your bones, lungs, circulatory system, joints, immune system, and more. The recommended daily allowance by the government is just enough to keep a perfectly healthy person from developing a deficiency disease, such as scurvy. If you are exposed to any type of pollutant, allergen, chemical, or food additive then your daily requirement to stay healthy increases. Even stress and exercise produce free radicals that lead to oxidative stress, greatly increasing the need for vitamin C.

Free radicals are responsible for creating infection. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, protects cells, proteins and lipids from free radical damage. It also improves the function and life span of immune cells. This helps the body to defend itself from almost every infectious disease. It also has a dramatic effect on existing infections. An article in Life Extension Magazine reported that “studies of vitamin C supplementation in military personnel and other subjects living in close quarters have shown that pneumonia occurred a remarkable 80-100% less often in subjects taking vitamin C than in those who did not supplement with the vitamin”.

Vitamin C is also responsible for the production of collagen and elastin, which are the major components of connective tissues all over your body. All of your bones, joints, blood vessels and organs are constantly experiencing cell death and renewal. They are in constant need of collagen and elastin to repair themselves. Without enough, we experience unhealthy aging, cancers, high cholesterol, degraded neurotransmitters, improper hormone production, and a long list of inflammatory, degenerative, and infectious diseases.

Vitamin C is needed to properly produce cells, absorb calcium and iron, and prevent diseases such as cataracts, cancer, and heart disease. It also is necessary to regulate blood clotting, which prevents clotting and bleeding disorders.

Ascorbic acid is needed for dental health as well. Your gums are generally the first place that you will notice a difference if you’re not getting enough vitamin C. They are made up almost entirely of connective tissue that is stressed every time you bite down or clench your teeth. You may notice your gums most dramatically turning red, swelling, receding, or bleeding around the teeth that touch first when you gently close your jaw. This is because the gums experience the most stress in these areas. Gums that are inflamed or weak due to a lack of vitamin C are susceptible to gum disease. Gum disease starts as plaque, which recent studies have shown cannot form if proper levels of vitamin C are maintained. Even sailors in the 18th century knew that if their gums started bleeding that they were in danger of scurvy. This is still why many doctors use the health of your gums to determine if you’re on your way to cardiovascular disease, arthritis, lung dysfunction, high blood pressure, stroke, and many other health problems.

Ask your doctor about supplementing with vitamin C. If you have stomach or digestive issues, you can take a buffered form of vitamin C that is non-acidic, like sodium ascorbate vitamin C powder.

How to Maximize Your Vitamin C Benefits

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Learning how to correctly take your vitamin C can help you to increase the benefits that you get from it. Vitamin C will give you protection from scurvy at minimal levels, but won’t necessarily provide you with symptom relief or protection from major diseases unless it is taken at a high enough level. It’s hard to say what the correct “daily requirement” of vitamin C is because everyone has a different level of stress or disease in their body. Therefore, learning how to find the right dosage for your condition and your body can be greatly beneficial.

In general, bowel tolerance of ascorbic acid is proportionate to the toxicity of your disease. In other words, you won’t eliminate excess vitamin C until it’s out of things to correct in your body. Therefore, a daily dose when you’re healthy can range anywhere from 1 to 20 grams per day, depending on the condition and need of your body. One study showed that people with influenza (the flu) or mononucleosis (mono), could take up to 200 grams of vitamin C daily without stomach discomfort or diarrhea. In fact, for severe illnesses such as these, marked improvement was not shown until the dosage of ascorbic acid reached near the bowel tolerance level. The reason that you may not feel better when taking smaller doses of vitamin C is that it is quickly destroyed by injured tissues, disease, and stress. Think of it as trying to wash mud off of your arm with only a few drops of water. It may get smeared around, but the mud is still there. Only with larger and larger amounts of water would you be able to clean off the mud.

Vitamin C works by scavenging free radicals produced by stress, infection, inflammation, germs, bacteria, illness and disease. Not only do diseases and injuries cause damaging free radicals to form, they also lead to the formation of other diseases. Almost every disease is caused by and/or produces free radicals. Infection, heart disease, cancer, burns, trauma, aging, allergies, and autoimmune diseases are all included.

Taking vitamin C daily can vastly reduce your chances of developing a giant list of health conditions. Vitamin C is very sensitive to stress and is generally the first vitamin to be depleted by it. Without enough vitamin C in your system daily, stress can take its toll on your immune system very quickly. Vitamin C is known to bring balance to an overactive or weakened immune system. It does the same for your stress response, helping to control anxiety, overproduction of cortisol (stress hormone), and inflammation.

Many people don’t realize that vitamin C is required by our bodies daily to maintain cartilage, bones and teeth. It is also necessary for producing collagen, absorbing iron, and controlling cholesterol levels. Our bodies go from growing and developing to breaking down and aging. Our cells and connective tissues, even bone, are always regenerating. If enough vitamin C isn’t available for the production of collagen and elastin, our bodies will improvise by using hard, inflexible cholesterol plaques to repair tiny tears and injuries. This is how arteries harden, joints become more prone to damage, and wrinkles form.

Talk with your doctor about supplementing with the best vitamin C, sodium ascorbate vitamin C powder. This highly absorbable, non-acidic form of vitamin C is the most economical and easiest way to get your perfect daily dose of vitamin C.

Vitamin C Saves Lives

Vitamin C Saves Lives

Millions die each year from heart disease and stroke, and the overwhelming evidence is that vitamin C supplementation would save many lives.

Two-time Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling estimated that the rate of heart disease would be reduced by 80 per cent if adults in the US supplemented with 2,000 to 3,000 mg of vitamin C each day. According to Dr. Pauling, “Since vitamin C deficiency is the common cause of human heart disease, vitamin C supplementation is the universal treatment for this disease.”[1] Heart disease is the number one killer in the US. For those with existing heart disease Dr. Pauling said that blockage of heart arteries could actually be reversed by supplementing with 6,000 of vitamin C and 6,000 of lysine (a common amino acid) taken in divided doses throughout the day. Vitamin C supplementation both lowers serum cholesterol levels and repairs lesions of arterial walls. 1998 Nobel Prize winner Dr. Louis J. Ignarro found that supplementing with vitamin C and vitamin E significantly reduces the risk of developing arteriosclerosis.[2]

A study examined vitamin E and vitamin C supplement use in relation to mortality risk in 11,178 persons aged 67-105 who participated in the Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly over a nine year period.[3] Simultaneous use of vitamins E and C was associated with a lower risk of total mortality and coronary mortality after adjusting for alcohol use, smoking history, aspirin use, and medical conditions.

A landmark study following over 85,000 nurses over a 16-year period for a total of 1,240,000 person-years found that vitamin C supplementation significantly reduced the risk of heart disease.[4] Intake of vitamin C from foods alone was insufficient to significantly effect the rate of heart disease. High quantities of vitamin C from supplements was essential to provide the protective effects. The study adjusted for age, smoking, and a variety of other coronary risk factors.

An international team pooled data from nine prospective studies of 293,000 people that included information on intakes of vitamin E, carotenoids, and vitamin C, with a 10-year follow-up to check for major incident coronary heart disease events in people without disease when the study began. Dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins was only weakly related to a reduced coronary heart disease risk. However, subjects who took as little as 700 mg of vitamin C daily in supplement form reduced their risk of heart disease events by 25 per cent compared to those who took no supplements. [5]

Researchers in Finland measured serum vitamin C levels in 2,419 middle-aged male participants of the ongoing Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. Men with a history of stroke were excluded from this analysis. Participants were followed for up to 10 years; the outcome of interest was development of stroke. During the follow-up period 120 participants suffered a stroke. After controlling for potential confounders – including age, BMI, smoking, blood pressure, and serum cholesterol – the researchers found that men with a low vitamin C level in their blood were more than twice as likely as those with a higher vitamin C blood level to experience a stroke.[6]

A stroke commonly occurs when a blood clot or thrombus blocks the blood flow to parts of the brain. A thrombus may form in an artery affected by arteriosclerosis. A recent study has shown how low plasma vitamin C was associated with increased risk of stroke, especially among hypertensive and overweight men.[7]

Vitamin C is preserves the integrity of the artery walls and strengthens cardiovascular tissue. Research indicates a reduced incidence of major coronary heart disease events at high supplemental vitamin C intakes.[8] Recent studies have shown that vitamin C appears to reduce levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, and there is a growing body of evidence that chronic inflammation is linked to an increased risk of heart disease.[9]

Most Americans fail to eat the US RDA for several vitamins and minerals. Supplements are not the problem; they are the solution. Malnutrition is the problem.

INTRAVENOUS VITAMIN C AS CANCER THERAPY

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Here at Wholesale Nutrition, we highly value valid research related to vitamins and supplements. We are continually impressed with the reports from Orthomolecular Medicine News Service and would like to share some of their content with you from time to time. We hope you find it as fascinating as we do!

(OMNS Apr 14, 2011) Scientists have long studied the effects of mega-doses of vitamin C to treat a wide variety of illnesses and diseases. Research documents vitamin C as one of the best antiviral agents available. Vitamin C has been shown to neutralize and eliminate a wide range of toxins, and to enhance host resistance, greatly augmenting the immune system’s ability to neutralize bacterial and fungal infections. Most importantly, there is extensive published research demonstrating vitamin C’s anti-cancer properties. (1)

In the 1970s, Hugh D. Riordan, M.D. and colleagues began studying the underlying causes of cancer and ways to treat cancer in a non-toxic fashion. From this research came the Riordan Intravenous Vitamin C Protocol for Cancer. (2) This protocol is widely recognized in the integrative and orthomolecular medicine community and is commonly used as an effective adjunct to conventional oncologic therapy.

Oncologist Victor Marcial, M.D., has experience using it. He says: “We studied patients with advanced cancer (stage 4). 40 patients received 40,000-75,000 mg intravenously several times a week. . . In addition, they received a diet and other supplements. The initial tumor response rate was achieved in 75% of patients, defined as a 50% reduction or more in tumor size. . . As a radiation oncologist, I also give radiation therapy. Vitamin C has two effects. It increases the beneficial effects of radiation and chemotherapy and decreases the adverse effects. But this is not a subtle effect, is not 15-20%, it’s a dramatic effect. Once you start using IV vitamin C, the effect is so dramatic that it is difficult to go back to not using it.” (3)

In 2009 and 2010, Riordan IV-C and Cancer Symposiums brought together medical professionals, researchers and IV-C practitioners from the United States and abroad. The latest advancements in intravenous vitamin C cancer therapy were presented in detail, recorded on video, and are now available for free access at http://www.riordanclinic.org/education/symposium/2009.shtml (twelve lectures) and http://www.riordanclinic.org/education/symposium/2010.shtml (nine lectures)

OMNS readers are urged to have their physicians (especially oncologists) watch these important presentations.

Writes Dr. Smith: “I have used Dr. Klenner’s methods on hundreds of patients. He is right. It helps almost every condition and situation, and my failures were due to inadequate amounts.”

The book discusses, in varying detail, megavitamin treatment of the following illnesses:

Virus Pneumonia
Poliomyelitis
Hepatitis
Herpes Simplex & Zoster
Chicken Pox
Measles
Mumps
Mononucleosis
Diphtheria
Dysentery
Pancreatitis
Scarlet fever
Rheumatic fever
Tuberculosis
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Tetanus
Arthritis
High cholesterol
Ruptured intervertebral discs
Corneal ulcers
Diabetes
Glaucoma
Schizophrenia
Burns
Heat stroke
Radiation burns
Surgery
Heavy Metal (including Lead) Poisoning
Other Poisonings
Venomous bites
Allergies
Poison Oak or Ivy
Myasthenia Gravis
Experienced physicians have used massive amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients in treating an astonishing and nearly unbelievable variety of conditions. “Many physicians refuse to employ Vitamin C in the amounts suggested,” writes Dr. Klenner, “simply because it is counter to their fixed ideas of what is reasonable. There is no doubt that physicians are being brainwashed with the current journal advertising. I have never seen a patient that Vitamin C would not benefit.”

Dr. Klenner was board certified in diseases of the chest. The Shutes, in obstetrics. Dr. Cathcart, in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Smith, in pediatrics. Dr. Riordan, in psychiatry. Dr. Cameron, in surgery.

What you will learn from the documents above may be a good start, but it is only a start. We recommend that you read extensively and then discuss these physicians’ experiences with your doctor before making any health decision.

Sepsis Treatment with Vitamin C

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Sepsis is a dangerous illness in which the bloodstream is flooded with bacteria. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection. The mortality rate of sepsis can be as high as 60% in people with underlying conditions, health problems, or compromised immunity.

The bacterial infection that can lead to sepsis can start out as a kidney infection, pneumonia, meningitis, or an infection of the bone called osteomyelitis. Infection can really start anywhere in the body. It’s commonly seen around IV sites, surgical wounds, bedsores, or in the bowel. Blood tests can confirm the infection is present, but may not show up if the patient is on antibiotics.

Signs of sepsis include shock, confusion, blood pressure drop, hyperventilation, or organ failure. Someone with sepsis will usually need to be cared for in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Antibiotics are administered and the source of the infection is identified. Symptoms are treated as needed. Procedures such as dialysis, IV fluid administration, and assisted breathing may be necessary.

One of the devastating effects of sepsis can be disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Normally, when you are injured, your body will send proteins to the site of the injury to stop bleeding. If DIC sets in, these proteins become severely overactive. This causes blood clots to form all over the body, generally starting in the smaller capillaries of the extremities and organs. This will prevent oxygen from reaching these organs and can quickly result in organ failure or stroke. As the body runs out of these specialized proteins, the ability to clot blood is lost and severe bleeding can occur.

Dr. Karel Tyml and his colleagues were the first to discover the plugging of capillaries that leads to shock and multiple organ failure in sepsis patients. Dr. Tyml and his research team at The University of Western Ontario and Lawson Health Research Institute have tested the effects of vitamin C on these blood clots and have made some interesting discoveries. They found that vitamin C can not only prevent the onset of sepsis, but can reverse the life threatening aspects of the disease.

One of the problems that can lead to the blood clotting associated with sepsis is oxidative stress. Additionally, once clotting has begun, the body can no longer remove toxins from the blood or cells. This leads to the blood becoming toxic and escalating the illness. Dr. Tyml’s research has shown that vitamin C prevents the oxidative stress that can lead to clotting when administered early on in the onset of sepsis. It can also restore blood flow in plugged capillaries after clotting has set in.

This treatment for sepsis has a lot of promise. Vitamin C is considered safe and effective as a treatment for many conditions. These discoveries could significantly reduce the mortality rate of sepsis, especially because vitamin C is a very inexpensive treatment option. In countries where expensive care is not available, vitamin C could be the answer.

Taking vitamin C daily could also help to prevent infections and help you to avoid sepsis. Using the best vitamin C, like a high quality vitamin C powder, can prevent and improve recovery time from infections. Buying discount vitamins online makes improving your health affordable for many people.
