Leaky Gut Syndrome Bone Broth

Could healing your gut also heal your disease?

In our article “Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases Caused by a Leaky Gut?” we described how a leaky gut happens, what diseases it causes, and what to avoid to keep your gut healthy. “Refined flours and highly processed foods are really hard on the epithelial lining of the gut. High glycemic index foods, dairy products, and gluten are damaging. High chronic caffeine use, excessive alcohol consumption, and overuse of antibiotics are bad for the epithelial lining. All of these things weaken the bonds between the cells letting particles escape.

Could your vitamin D levels be contributing to your infertility?

Interesting article on The New York Times website. We hope that you find it as informative as we did.

Inadequate levels of vitamin D may increase the risk for uterine fibroids, a new study reports.

Vitamin D has been associated with reduced risk for various diseases, but this is the first to examine the connection to fibroids, benign tumors of the uterus that can cause pain and bleeding.

What Causes Chronic Inflammation?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Inflammation can be the underlying cause of many diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune disease, and more. Learning how inflammation happens and which vitamins help to fight it can give us the power to prevent many chronic and disabling diseases.

A lot of times, our diets are to blame for chronic inflammatory conditions. Flavor enhancing chemicals, anti-caking ingredients, thickening agents, hydrogenated oils, and many other food additives are structurally identical to the compounds that are supposed to activate our immune systems into stimulating an inflammatory response.

A lot of food additives are actually neurotoxins, like monosodium glutamate, and are added to inflame the brain, putting it into “fight or flight” mode. This produces a heightened sense of smell and taste, but can also unwanted side effects, like migraines, anxiety, sensory processing problems, seizures, scarring in the brain, and more.

Hormones are given to animals that are put into our food supply so that they grow bigger and faster than naturally raised animals. They produce more milk, lay more eggs, and mature at a faster rate than we’ve ever seen in history. There is no regulation on how much hormone the animals receive, so over time they’ve been given more and more to keep up with the demand of the fast food industry. These hormones are passed to us and react with our own hormonal systems, affecting our reproductive organs, thyroid function, adrenal glands, and more. All of our body systems are affected by hormonal changes.

Having these chemicals and hormones in our diets causes our immune systems to constantly overreact to invaders; allergens, toxins, bacteria and infection, whatever it comes into contact with. This produces a constant state of inflammation that we may not even be aware of until we experience serious health problems. An overactive immune system can lead to behavioral and psychological problems, inflammatory diseases, chronic fatigue, obesity, organ damage, nerve damage, chronic pain and more.

All of this chronic inflammation and artificial input can cause your immune system to attack healthy tissues of your body while “missing” viruses and other health threats. Inflammation flushes your system of its vitamin and mineral stores at an alarming rate, leaving you susceptible to vitamin deficiencies that cause even more problems for your body. Eating natural, certified organic meat, fruits and vegetables can give your body a fighting chance.

Supplementing with vitamins that are depleted by inflammation can help you get on your way to a healthy body and mind. Vitamins A, B6, C, and D are great for fighting inflammation and replenishing vitamin stores. Antioxidants help to flush unwanted toxins from the body, strengthen and calm the immune and hormonal systems, and regulate the inflammatory response.

Part 2: Are Obesogens Making Me Fat?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Obesogens don’t let your body’s signaling system tell it when you need fat, adrenaline, or reproductive hormones. They signal your body to continually be hungry, tired, and producing fat, even when you’re eating fruits and vegetables or drinking water. They disrupt brain development and can cause brain abnormalities that have been linked to seizure disorders, depression, attention deficit disorder, and more. They have been linked directly to immune disorders and a host of other preventable diseases. By now, hopefully, you can see how obesogens can severely impact your life, your health, and even the lives of your children.

Obesogens accumulate in your body, so over time, they become more of a health risk. Research hasn’t yet shown us how to reverse the effects of obesogens, so our best strategy at this time is to avoid them and to try to eliminate existing ones from our bodies.

Chemicals that are classified as obesogens are used in the production of PVC pipes, i.e. your plumbing. Using a high quality water filter helps to eliminate these chemicals from your drinking water. Other PVC chemical sources include your water hose, backpacks, shower curtains, toilet seats, tables, remote controls, and more. The list is really endless.

Obesogens are absorbed by food and drinks that are stored or heated in plastic containers. Canned foods are lined with plastic and then heated in the canning process. Opt for frozen or fresh vegetables instead. Try to choose drinks and food that come in glass or stainless steel containers. Don’t reuse water bottles or other disposables, because they can be very dangerous.

Hormones, high fructose corn syrup, and pesticides are also obesogen sources. You should buy certified organic food whenever possible. Remember that even eating a strawberry that has been sprayed with pesticide can tell your body to produce fat cells and damage your body. High fructose corn syrup is added to almost every prepackaged meal.

Non-organic meat is a big obesogen source. The animals’ feed is heavily laden with hormones and antibiotics to produce meats in proportions that our ancestors wouldn’t believe. A one pound chicken breast used to be unheard of! Think about the unregulated amounts of estrogen that is given to chickens to make them constantly lay eggs; huge eggs. Then think about the large amounts given to cows to make them produce gigantic volumes of milk.

The hormones in food have recently been named as the cause of young girls hitting puberty at an average age of 7-9, instead of in their teens. Boys also have higher levels of estrogen than they should. That puts them at high risk for infertility, obesity, mood disorders, and many cancers, including cervical and breast cancer. This is the first generation of kids in history that actually have a shorter life expectancy than their parents’.

It’s time that we stop sacrificing our health for petty conveniences. Making wise choices and clearing out the chemicals that are stored in your body is very important. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that flushes out free-radicals and chemicals. Using the best vitamin C powder is a good way to boost your immunity and start cleaning up your system.

If you think that organic food is more expensive, just remember that you’ll be saving loads of money by avoiding prepackaged items. Using discount vitamins and supplements can help you to afford a long-term supplementing regimen that can help you to improve your health for life. What little extra you do have to spend now could save you and your kids thousands in medical expenses later.

How Vitamins and Supplements Combat Infertility

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Nearly 25% of couples have trouble conceiving and often turn to medical procedures and treatments to increase their chances of starting a family. These procedures are often more successful when you take certain vitamins and supplements that improve your chances. Vitamins and supplements can improve outcomes for couples experiencing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), low sperm count, couples trying in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and more.

If you have already been seeking help with reproduction, then you probably have heard a lot about preconception care. This is the stage of the reproductive process where you take care of yourself and try to increase your odds of having a healthy body, healthy eggs, and healthy sperm. It is fairly well known that women of reproductive age should take a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid to prevent neural tube defects, but it is not so common to think about men and women taking certain vitamins and supplements to improve ovulation, egg health, sperm count, and sperm motility. Talk to your doctor or infertility specialist before you buy vitamins so that you know what types of problems you should be treating.

Vitamins are certainly not a guarantee that you will conceive, but they can drastically improve your chances. They are also effective in improving the odds of certain infertility treatments being successful. Vitamin C in particular has been proven to help with a multitude of infertility problems. Just a few are listed here.

Vitamin C protects cells and boosts immunity to help protect eggs from invading pathogens that can affect egg quality. Vitamin C works on the ovarian level, improving outcomes for a multitude of ovarian problems. Vitamin C nourishes the lining of the ovaries, helping to prevent cyst formation and aiding in ovulation. It also nourishes the lining of the fallopian tubes aiding in the transport of viable eggs. The egg itself is also strengthened and is not as susceptible to DNA damage when the mother is supplementing with vitamin C.

Vitamin C also supports the hormonal system of women in a few ways. It captures and eliminates free radicals that interfere with chemical signals that tell the pituitary gland which hormones to release. It stabilizes estrogen function and keeps the body from destroying the estrogen that you have. Vitamin C improves the mucus environment in the vagina and uterus, making them more hospitable to sperm and increasing the chance of conception.

For men, vitamin C protects sperm from environmental pollutants that often affect sperm count. Studies have shown over a 100% increase in sperm count for men within the first week of supplementing with vitamin C. They also had over a 90% reduction in sperm DNA damage. Abnormal sperm formations, abnormalities, and agglutination were also drastically decreased. Agglutination, sperm clumping that causes immobility, can be greatly improved, especially if men take the best vitamin C that is highly absorbable by the body. Since vitamin C deficiency and infertility are directly linked to testicular cancer, it is generally advised by physicians that men with fertility problems always supplement with vitamin C.

Other vitamins and supplements like CoQ10, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, selenium and zinc have also proven to be effective in improving your odds of conception. Talk with your doctor before you buy vitamins and you could be on your way to healthy fertility.
