Autism News: Part 3 in the series "Treating Autism Symptoms with Vitamins and Supplements". This section concentrates on the possibility of using daily <a href="http://www.nutri.com"title="Vitamin C Powder">Vitamin C powder to prevent brain damage by immunizations and reduce symptoms of autistic children.

Part 3: Combating Oxidative Stress and Brain Inflammation with Vitamin C

Oxidative stress is a big problem with most autistic children. Oxidative stress refers to the body’s inability to detoxify, or remove toxins from the system. When toxins, viruses or heavy metals cannot be removed, free radicals are produced at an alarming rate. Free radicals damage all parts of the cell, including proteins and DNA. They also cause long term inflammation in the body and nervous system. Oxidative stress inhibits the body’s ability to reduce the amount of free radicals and can lead to a myriad of health and neurological problems.

Many people have tried to detoxify the body of these toxins and heavy metals that are causing oxidative stress by using the chelation method. This is a controversial method of cleansing the blood and it can be dangerous.

Alternatively, vitamin C is an extremely safe substance to use as protection from oxidative stress. This fact has lead researchers to start looking at vitamin C, not only as a way to stop autism from worsening, but also as a possible prevention for autism.

There have only been a handful of studies to test vitamin C’s effectiveness in treating autism, and it has yet to be determined what dosage may be effective in treatment. What we do know is that vitamin C has been proven safe and effective in improving cognitive abilities, boosting immunity, reducing allergen reactions and sweeping free radicals, heavy metals and toxins from the body.

This can be very beneficial to individuals on the autism spectrum. Since they are almost all under oxidative stress, they are being bombarded by free radicals that cause inflammation all of the time. Vitamin C mops up free radicals. It also protects cells by keeping mitochondria and cell walls from being damaged by toxins, free radicals or unstable heavy metals in the body.

Vitamin C is also vital for brain function, yet we do not produce it on our own. We must get it from our diets or through supplementation. Vitamin C is known to increase cognition, mental function and memory, while decreasing depression, confusion and brain fog. It boosts immunity, clears the body of free radicals and protects cells from damage.

As we mentioned earlier, autistic individuals can have very long term brain inflammation. When inflamed, the brain produces glutamates to protect itself. Over long periods of time, glutamates can damage myelin sheaths in the brain. Inflammation may be reduced by using vitamin C, omega 3’s, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods. You may be able to minimize and prevent damage to nerve cells using this method. The hypersensitive state induced by inflammation in the brain may also be lessened, thus, reducing autism symptoms.

<a href="http://www.nutri.com"title="Vitamin C Powder">Vitamin C powder or vitamin C tablets should be taken daily. Vitamin C is safe, even in large doses. If the body gets too much vitamin C, it simply eliminates it. If you are interested in taking vitamin C to reduce autism symptoms, you should always talk to a doctor about a vitamins and supplements regimen before you begin.

Autism News: First of a 3-part series discussing how <a href="http://www.nutri.com"title="Vitamins and Supplements">vitamins and Supplements are necessary for children on a restricted or gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF)diet. Certain vitamins and supplements can greatly reduce symptoms and behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders. Vitamin C may offer protection from immunization injury and relief of oxidative stress in autistic individuals.

Part 1: Why Do Vitamins and Supplements Work?

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) usually have a number of nutrient and mineral deficiencies. This could be due to diet or physiological abnormalities that cause certain nutrients to be poorly absorbed or misused by the digestive system. Many children with autism benefit from diets that exclude certain foods, but these limited kinds of diets can leave their brains lacking the nutrition that they need to function and develop. Whether the autistic child is on a special diet or inflicts a severely limited diet on his or her self, supplementation can help fill in the nutritional gaps and facilitate progress. The majority of autistic children can achieve higher brain function (like speech, language and social skills), have less repetitive and detrimental behaviors, increase immune system function and improve sleep patterns with the use of vitamins and supplements.

The Gluten-free/Casein-free diet and the Specific Carbohydrate diet seriously limit nutritional intake. This does not mean that you should waver from what is helping your child, but you should be aware that supplementation may be necessary. This is also true for autistic children that are very picky eaters, have texture issues with food or who are obsessive about controlling what they eat. Studies and parents have found out that most autistic children greatly benefit from vitamin and supplement implementation. Great developments have been seen in children that have no food allergies, as well as in the ones that need to be on special diets.

Vitamins, minerals and nutrients that autistic children are often deficient in include the B vitamins: B6, B12, B1, B3 and B5. Vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, folate, biotin, Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), and omega-3 fatty acids are also commonly low. The brain can be greatly hindered by these deficiencies and it is no wonder that most autistic children have a very hard time progressing without nutritional supplementation.

A vast majority of autistic children have an elevated level of oxidative stress. This impairs their immune system and puts their nervous system into a hypersensitive state. The hypersensitive state is thought to be caused by the oxidative stress and a long-term inflammation of the body and nervous system. When the brain is inflamed, it tends to function on a primal level, often staying in survival mode. Cognitive skills, social skills and frontal lobe development are severely hindered when the brain is in this state. Children will often feel the need to exhibit stemming behaviors, which can include vocalizing loudly, tapping, hitting or stroking things, rocking, spinning and other repetitive behaviors. This keeps the brain focused on something other than their hypersensitivities.

<a href="http://www.nutri.com"title="Vitamins and Supplements">Vitamins and Supplements have successfully been used to target inflammation, oxidative stress, immunity deficits, stemming, brain development and higher learning in autistic children.

“Part 2” of this series discusses which vitamins and supplements target and improve the nervous and immune systems. Vitamins and supplements offer a safe therapy option that has given many autistic children a chance to overcome the challenges of autism. As a precaution, you should always talk to a doctor about a vitamins and supplements regimen before you begin.
